Business Cards for Musicians: Play and Print

Harpist, female musician, performing outdoors at the 23 May 2009Whether you are in a band, play solo gigs in the local café or perform on stage along with an orchestra, every musician needs a business card. In some cases a musician’s calling card will be the lead for a new gig or booking. For other musicians, the business card acts as a personal calling card.

A musician’s business card should be focused but creative, simple yet effective. Musicians are artists who need to not only show their musical skills but their temperament and personality. A musician is promoting a package as an instrument can’t play itself and a musician can’t play thin air.  A card that encompasses both person and service is ideal for the modern musician.

Designs for musicians don’t have to be literal; a card filled with musical notes is not too original and may come across as a little amateur. Choose instruments and images that compliment your particular skill set. A drummer could use an image of drums or drum sticks. A pianist may opt for an image of piano keys. This concept should be used sparingly. A photograph of a concert hall may work a little better and no image at all is an option, although a portrait would be appropriate.

Smooth cards in a matter or gloss finish work well for musician business cards. The type of music can help the shape the card. A classical instrument player may use creams and matte browns in their design where as a modern drummer may opt for bright reds and blacks. Careful color use helps to express the musician’s personality. Most importantly the contact information must be legible.

Contact information for a musician should include the usual name, number and e-mail address but must include either the type of musician the card belongs to or a list of the instruments played. A tag line that describes professional experience, accreditation as well as genre is helpful to potential clients.

Besides always carrying a few in the pocket or purse, musicians should distribute their cards at local music stores, concert halls and musical venues. Music is like any other business and self promotion is the key to success.
