Creativity and individuality are nice additions to any business card but when will you cross the line? In many areas of business, thinking outside of the box will get you noticed. So will an overly creative business card, for all the wrong reasons. Will it stand the test of time? Here are a few tips on conformity and business cards to keep your card on their desk and out of the recycling pile.

Choose standard size business cards to ensure you get into the old school rolodex. Sure, they’ll have your information in the computer, but that old fashioned desk top rolodex is the place they’ll search for your number. Its convenient when the pc is switched off, there is a power outage or they are already in there looking for someone else’s number. Keep yourself accessible and convenient.

Horizontal designs on business cards are easier to scan and fit easily into the rolodex.  Sure vertical designs are eye catching and different but in the rolodex all they are is sideways. And therefore annoying. Dare to be different somewhere else in your life. In the business card world, it’s all about fitting in. A good business stands out regardless of the business card.

Blaring and overly loud designs can bother potential clients so much they discard your card. Just like LOUD LETTERS loud designs seem to SHOUT at the individual looking at it. Choose designs and backgrounds that compliment the business and not necessarily the personality of the owner.

Make you card easy to read, easy to scan and easy to share with others. A matte finish allows for writing notes and engraved printing ensures legibility and professionalism. Check the printing is good by spilling a little water on one of your cards. If the ink smudges, it isn’t going to last or remain readable.

Business cards are great tools if they are kept and utilized by the people you give them to.  Make it easy on potential clients and provide durable quality cards with legible texts and appropriate levels of design. That way you can keep out of the trash and on their mind.
